International Potluck - November 2009

On Thursday, November 12th the Faculty, Staff, and Senior CLS students brought their favorite dishes to share in our annual International potluck. This is what it looked like before the food began arriving.

The food begins to arrive.

Mr. Show pointed out each dish and the contributor explained what it was and any interesting facts about the food.

Wish I could remember all the names of the dishes and who brought them, The black and white dish were rice balls - I think!!

There were several dishes of delicious enchiladas. These were prepared by Mrs. Reiner.

Grace Carlos from the Chemistry Department brought fixings for haystacks.

Andrea Rogers brought these delicious chocholate chip cookies covered with carmel and chocholate. Yummy Yummy.

Mango fool was brought by Edna Haldar who also brought a spicy dish of rice and chicken.

The two loves of bannana bread were brought by Jenissa Vazquez. Sorry folks but this is about all I can connect with - but I know Nadya Lewis brought many dishes of food.

There was so much food left over that any student or faculty member who passed by was invited to partake. The food was all great - thanks for a very enjoyable meal.

Academic Discovery

It's an overcast day at Andrews University this first Tuesday of October. The CLS majors are gathering in room HH333 to hear a presentation by our newest faculty member, Don Barton.

Karen Reiner, the coordinator for Academic Discoveries ( formerly called Assemblies) introduces Don to those present. The title of Don's presentation is: "Student Missions, Medical Technology, and Malaria"

Don began the meeting with a bible text that illustrated his premise that whatever we do for God is not wasted.

Don explained how he came to chose the degree in Medical Technology (now called Medical Laboratory Science) and where he served as a student missionary.

The country of Belize was where Don served working in a hospital laboratory.

For his Masters research Don developed a rapid method of malarial identification using microhematocrit tubes in place of the traditional thick smear. He found that it was effective in the identification of Plasmodium vivax but not effective for other forms of malaria. Perhaps while at Andrews he will pursue perfecting the technique for the other malarias?

Newest faculty member

Donald Barton, M.S., MT(ASCP) is the latest faculty member to join the CLS team. Don came to us from Grand Junction, Colorado where he was Point-of-care Coordinator at St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center Laboratory http://www.stmarygj.com/ and also worked as an independent database developer of quality assurance software for use in the clinical laboratory. Don received his M.S. in Microbiology from Loma Linda University in 1985 and taught microbiology and virologyat California State University in San Bernadino, CA and La Sierra University. Don is married to Cindy, a Registered Nurse, and has two daughters; Linzi, a Sophomore at Andrews University doing Adventist Colleges Abroad in Argentina, and Andrea, a Junior at Campion Academy in Colorado. His teaching responsibilities include Principles of Immunology and Fundamentals of Human Blood Biology. Don will assume many of the responsibilities currently performed by Al McMullen following his retirement in August, 2010.
