Tuesday, February 23rd was the annual "Off to Clinicals" celebration. The Seniors will be done with their didactic work on Thursday and report to the assigned clinical site on Monday, March 7th. The pins represent available clinical sites.

The cake with each of the Seniors names on it plus the two cars that the students could win if their names were drawn.

Mrs. Karen Reiner shared some thoughts to start the program and had opening prayer.

Both the Seniors and underclassmen were in attendance.

Each Senior gave a short speech in which they were to tell the city or country they were from, what affiliated school they were from, which clinical site they were assigned to, and some advice for the underclassmen on how to be successful in the program. These are a few of the students who gave their talk.

Department celebrates re-accreditation

In the Spring of 2010 the CLS Department underwent a re-accreditation and after the onsite review team gave the program a perfect score the program received the maximum of 7 years of Continuing Accreditation. That means the next accreditation review won't be until 2017.

To celebrate, the Department went to the Tippecanoe Place Restaurant in South Bend for a Sunday brunch. The site is the old mansion of the Studebaker family.

Faculty and Spouses who were able to make it, enjoyed the great food and fellowship. We missed having Tim and Monica and their spouses join us as they were unable to attend.

The CLS Faculty and Staff provided refreshments for the students on the last day of classes for Fall semester.

Perhaps the reason Mr. Show (CLS Chemistry Instructor) is standing back as he

Thursday, December 2nd may be the last day of classes but the CLS students are busy in the lab.

There's those pesky microbes that have to be identified for Mrs. Reiner's microbiology class.

And the WBC Differentials to finish for Mr. Newkirk's Hematology class.

But the Faculty also have lots of work to finish before the Fall break begins. Preparing final exams, grading lab exercises and exams. Here Karen Reiner is hard at these tasks.

CLS Seniors Off 2 Clinicals party

The Class of 2010 are off to clinicals at the endo of this week. The CLS Department held the traditional "Off-to-Clinicals" assembly with cake and punch.

Each student talked about where they were going for their clinical experience and gave the upcoming CLS students advice on how to survive.

Every so often a plate of goodies appears in the student lounge. Andrea Rogers, Senior CLS major bakes some wonderful treats. This morning she brought in some chocolate chip and butterscotch chip bars. They seem to be appearing on the morning of Chemistry exams??? On Thursday, November 12th the Faculty, Staff, and Senior CLS students brought their favorite dishes to share in our annual International potluck. This is what it looked like before the food began arriving.

The food begins to arrive.

Mr. Show pointed out each dish and the contributor explained what it was and any interesting facts about the food.

Here are some pictures of the food, and not all of it, as food contined to arrive after these pictures were taken.

Wish I could remember all the names of the dishes and who brought them, The black and white dish were rice balls - I think!!

There were several dishes of delicious enchiladas. These were prepared by Mrs. Reiner.

Grace Carlos from the Chemistry Department brought fixings for haystacks.

Andrea Rogers brought these delicious chocholate chip cookies covered with carmel and chocholate. Yummy Yummy.

Mango fool was brought by Edna Haldar who also brought a spicy dish of rice and chicken.

The two loves of bannana bread were brought by Jenissa Vazquez. Sorry folks but this is about all I can connect with - but I know Nadya Lewis brought many dishes of food.

Academic Discovery

It's an overcast day at Andrews University this first Tuesday of October. The CLS majors are gathering in room HH333 to hear a presentation by our newest faculty member, Don Barton.

Karen Reiner, the coordinator for Academic Discoveries ( formerly called Assemblies) introduces Don to those present. The title of Don's presentation is: "Student Missions, Medical Technology, and Malaria"

Don began the meeting with a bible text that illustrated his premise that whatever we do for God is not wasted.

Don explained how he came to chose the degree in Medical Technology (now called Medical Laboratory Science) and where he served as a student missionary.

The country of Belize was where Don served working in a hospital laboratory.

For his Masters research Don developed a rapid method of malarial identification using microhematocrit tubes in place of the traditional thick smear. He found that it was effective in the identification of Plasmodium vivax but not effective for other forms of malaria. Perhaps while at Andrews he will pursue perfecting the technique for the other malarias?

Newest faculty member

Donald Barton, M.S., MT(ASCP) is the latest faculty member to join the CLS team. Don came to us from Grand Junction, Colorado where he was Point-of-care Coordinator at St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center Laboratory http://www.stmarygj.com/ and also worked as an independent database developer of quality assurance software for use in the clinical laboratory. Don received his M.S. in Microbiology from Loma Linda University in 1985 and taught microbiology and virologyat California State University in San Bernadino, CA and La Sierra University. Don is married to Cindy, a Registered Nurse, and has two daughters; Linzi, a Sophomore at Andrews University doing Adventist Colleges Abroad in Argentina, and Andrea, a Junior at Campion Academy in Colorado. His teaching responsibilities include Principles of Immunology and Fundamentals of Human Blood Biology. Don will assume many of the responsibilities currently performed by Al McMullen following his retirement in August, 2010.

August 1st, 2009 the CLS Faculty and Staff hosted the annual Certificate ceremony for the 2009 graduating class. Approximaetly 275 people were served a light meal of vege-meatballs, pita bread, fruit, veges, and cake. Thanks Mrs. Reiner for making over 1200 vege-meatballs. Also thanks to CLS students; Brittany Blair, Edna Haldar, Nicole Smith, Susana Lee Wong, Oraine Snaith, and Aria Bovell for helping with preparations. Special thanks to the following spouses for their help as well; Harvey Kilsby for keeping things organized, Kevin Reiner for photography, and Fran McMullen for kitchen duties. Without each of you it just wouldn't have happened.

Melphine graduated from the CLS program in 1998. Melphine joined the CLS faculty in August 2002 and taught the clinical microbiology and immunology courses until July 2004. She is married to a former CLS student, Alwyn Harriott (class of 1998) who has just completed his general surgery residence program (see previous blog listing)

Hi All-
I hope all of you are doing good. I think of you all often and miss working with all of you. I want to invite you to my defense. I know that you most likely won't be able to make it, but I wanted to let you know about it anyway. The date is set for Monday, Aug 17 at 10 am. at the Medical School at Wayne State.I also wanted to thank you for all you did for me to prepare me for not only my Med Tech career, but for giving me the opportunity to teach at Andrews. I don't know if I ever let you know how invaluable that experience was for me. In addition, thanks for mentoring me and helping me as I learned the ropes. It really paid off. I interviewed for a teaching position at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. As part of the interview I had to present a lecture to the faculty. The lecture had to include objectives and test questions. They were quite impressed that my objectives were "active" and that my test questions were application based. I owe that to all of you.Anyway, I was offered and did accept that position. MSU opened 2 new campuses in Detroit, so I won't have to move to Lansing. In addition, I am going to some part time research with an Infectious Disease physician, who works on Candida, at Henry Ford Hospital. The only sad part of all this, I just put in my 2 week notice at the hospital. After 11-years as a Med Tech, I'm going to miss the lab tremendously, it is so much of who I am. So thanks again for everything. You guys are the best! Below is a link to my first paper, which just got accepted for publication ( in a pretty good journal!). Alwyn Harriott General Surgeon

Alwyn Harriott graduated from the CLS program in 1998 and just completed his General Surgury residency. His wife Melphine Ponniah Harriott also graduated from the CLS program in 1998. Alwyn did his clinicals at Porter Hospital in Denver, Colorado while Melphine did hers at Shawnee Mission Medical Center near Kansas City, Kansas. I expect I-70 saw a lot of these two as they commuted back and forth.

On Friday, September 12th, the CLS Seniors along with Dr. Allan Steele's Marketting class made a trip to International Aid near Grand Haven, MI. This is the organization that provides the Lab-in-a-Suitcase. A project the CLS Faculty have been working on.

The bus arrived about 11:30 so the first task was to distribute the box lunches and have lunch before touring the facility.

After eating the group toured the facility. Here they saw the different types of equipment that IA makes available to under developed countries to help upgrade their medical facilities.

The Lab-in-a-Suitcase

IA is interested in having the diverse CLS student body assit them in collecting information about how the Lab-in-a-Suitcase is being utilized in the home countries represented by our CLS students.

IA trying to find out how many countries were represented by our class. This gentleman could converse in many different languages. He said he could say hello and goodbye in about 50 languages.

The tour lasted until about 2:30 then the students sang a song for the IA staff. It was then time to return to the bus for the trip back to Andrews.

The CLS class of 2009 is the largest class ever with 28 students. The student body represents 14 different birth countries with two

new ones, Lebanon and Romania, adding to our previous 62 birth countries that our graduates represent.

Christelle had the opportunity to spend the Summer working in the Microbiology Department at Mayo Clinic. She says " my quadrant streaking is perfect. It should be after streaking 100 plates a day!"

Christelle got to meet the Mayo brothers up close and personal.

Beach party

On Sabbath, June 28th the CLS Department hosted a picnic on the beach party for this summers CLS students. The weather started out beautiful but as is typical for Michigan - wait 5 minutes and it will change.

Very strong winds came up and blowing sand mixed with potatoe salad just didn't taste too good. The picnic was then moved to Karen and Kevin's home in Berrien and a great time was had by all.

Al on vacation

Al and Fran spent a wonderful week in Wyoming. Got to see lots of wildlife such as this grizzly bear in Yellowstone.

Yellowstone Park was as beautiful as ever but the weather was very unsettled. One moment you were in a blizzard the next in beautiful sunny weather. One advantage - not many tourists!!

New CLS logo

This is the new logo that has been developed for the CLS department. The original design was submitted by Charma Henry, a CLS major, and CJ Doss, a Junior Graphics Design major, digitized the design. Thanks to these two talented students for a very nice logo.

Seniors visit International Aid

On February 22nd some of the Seniors were taken to Grand Haven, MI to tour the facilities of International Aid. The class helped gather information for the "Lab-In-A-Suitcase" that IA makes available to medical personnel in underdeveloped countries.

They received a warm welcome, enjoyed a lovely lunch, then toured the facility. Just before leaving some of the students sang for the IA staff.

Tuesday, February 26th was a snowy day but it was bright and cheerful in room HH333 as the CLS Department hosted the annual "Off to Clinicals" party for the Senior class.

This was the view out the window of H333. Lots of snow sticking to the trees.

The annual cake with all the Senior's names and two cars that are given away. The only department on campus with a drawing for two cars that lucky students get to take as a reminder of their time at Andrews!!

Theo Cunningham and Matthew Marsh were the lucky students whose names were drawn.

Each Senior stood and introduced themselves and told where they were going for clinicals plus passed along some words of wisdom for the Juniors attending the party.

Tonya Shipp, a mother of three, has commuted from South Bend, IN every day for classes but will be doing her clinicals at South Bend Medical Foundation in South Bend so the commute will be a lot shorter.

Amanda Graves will be going to Memorial Health Care Systems in Chattanooga, TN to do her clinicals.

Smruti Damania is another one of our students that lives in South Bend, IN and commutes every day to campus. She will also be doing her clinicals at South Bend Medical Foundation so her commute will be much shorter.

Charmaigne Gallega will be doing the opposite of Tonya and Smruti. She lives in Berrien Springs and will be commuting to South Bend since she will be doing her clinical rotations at South Bend Medical Foundation.

Two students were not at the going away party. Gharbrielle Dorsett will be doing her clinicals at Lakeland St. Joseph in St. Joseph, MI and Gail Ferency, categorical in chemistry, will be doing her chemistry rotation at South Bend Medical Foundation

Senior valentine luncheon

The 2008 CLS Senior class hosted a very delicious valentine's luncheon for faculty and staff on Thursday, February 14th. The students prepared dishes representative of their homelands.

With the abundance of food that was available, any student or faculty member that happened to be passing through the hallways was invited to join to feast.

Sunday, December 2nd the CLS club and faculty hosted the annual Christmas party. Four different types of soup along with different types of Panera bread were served.

Karen had the opportunity to attend the College of American Pathologists (CAP) exhibits in Chicago, on Monday, October 1st. There she met the founder of CSI. That's right!! Ron Ghafary is the founder and President of Cytometry Specialists Inc. CSI-LABS, founded in 1997, is a state-of-the-art, independent oncology diagnostics laboratory located in Alpharetta, Georgia. On Thursday Sept 20th the CLS department held it's annual International Potluck. Actually there are several held during the school year. The Senior class really out did itself this year. There was so much food and such a variety of food that whoever happened to be walking the halways was invited to partake. The empty tables waiting to be filled.

Al was batching that week but still brought the perogies. Sorry they were not homemade this year.

Annual Spaghetti Dinner and Vespers

The annual spaghetti dinner was well attended. The featured menu of spaghetti, salad, bread sticks was followed by "create your own brownie sunday" with cookies and brownies supplied by the faculty.

For the first time this year a graduating senior was asked to read the covenant. Scott Juhl read the covenant and then the class responded with I Do signifying their acceptance of the covenant.

Al McMullen explaining to the guests the significance of his tie. There are two occassions when he wears this tie. One is when he is upset about something the students have done or haven't done. The other is for happy occassions. This was definitely a happy occassion.

On Sabbath, August 4th the CLS Department hosted the annual Certificate Ceremony for the graduating CLS majors. This year we had 21 graduates and all but one was able to attend the event.

Sabrina Ordonez is doing her clinical rotations at Huguley Memorial Medical Center and Carter BloodCare in Dallas, TX. Here she is doing crossmatches at the BloodCare facilities.

Gloria Mathur, Manager of Educational Services at Carter BloodCare took me on a tour of their new facilities. Since taking over another blood service they are now the third largest blood center in the U.S. They located near the Dallas/Ft Worth airport since they ship blood products to Europe. There are over 850 employees and provide over 700,000 blood components annually. Congratulations to Gloria Mathur who just received an award for the most outstanding Educator in the Southwest U.S.

Huguley is the main clinical site where Sabrina has been working. I will not show pictures of the lab since they are just beginning renovations and expansion. Right now they are so cramped for space that the new chemistry instruments they have purchased can not be put in to service as there is no room. Al visitied the clinical sites of Huguley Hospital and Carter BloodCare in Dallas, Texas, where Sabrina Ordonez is doing her clinical rotation. On Monday Al visited Huguley then took Sabrina out for lunch. On Tuesday Al visited the Carter bloodCare facility where Sabrina just started her rotation on Monday.

Kalyse Adelheid Reiner joined the CLS faculty on Monday, May 14th at 11:42 (she is already getting use to late nights preparing for class). Kelyse weight in at 10 lbs. and measured 22 inches long. Congratulations Karen and Kevin!!

With the dogwood in full bloom it says Spring has finally arrived on Andrews campus.

The Orchard Orioles are back eating our grape jelly. We have 3 males and 1 female that visit on a regular basis. The hummers haven't shown up yet.

Slide project

Mi Jung sent some pictures of her slide project so I thought I would share them with you. The Seniors, during their clinical rotation in hematology, have to prepare 2 case studies of abnormal hematology findings along with 2 case studies of normal hematology findings. Part of the grade is based on the students attention to detail making sure the slides are packaged correctly, CBC results clearly identified in red, and good quality slides produced.
